Yesterday, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica to close the Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for the Middle East. Patriarchs, bishops and priests from the seven different rites of the Church present in the Middle East participated in the liturgy. In his homily, Pope Benedict said one important contribution Christians make is the promotion of an authentic freedom of religion and conscience. He called this “one of the fundamental human rights that each state should always respect.”
