Benedict XVI: Respect Rights of Immigrants.

One human family: that's the theme chosen by Benedict XVI for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees to be held Sunday, January 16, 2011. The message was presented today at the Holy See Press Office. The Church, writes the Pope, recognizes the possibility for every person to leave their country and enter to another in search of better living conditions. Benedict XVI says that states have the right to regulate migration flows and to defend their borders, while ensuring the necessary respect for the inherent dignity of each person. Immigrants also have a duty to integrate into their host country, respecting the state's laws and identity. For the Church, the Pope says immigration is both an eloquent sign of our times that promotes mankind's vocation to form one family, but it also shows up the difficulties which instead of uniting the world, divide it and tear it apart. The Pope calls on everyone to pray that God will help mankind to build brotherly relationships at social, political and institutional levels so that understanding and reciprocal esteem among peoples and cultures may increase.
