No Future For Christians in Post-Saddam Iraq

UK

The Syrian Orthodox Archbishop Athanasios Dawood in London is urging Iraqi Christians to abandon their native land. “I say clearly and now -- the Christian people should leave their beloved land of our ancestors and escape the premeditated ethnic cleansing”. Athanasios said this one week after a massacre at the Syrian Catholic cathedral in Baghdad. “This is better than having them killed one by one – the archbishop added: “During Saddam Hussein, we were living in peace-- nobody attacked us. We had human rights, we had protection from the government but now nobody protects us.” “After we had a promise from America to bring us freedom, democracy, we've lost many people and our homes, churches and monasteries were bombed”.

Russian-Orthodox and Catholics Must Collaborate

Russia

Last week Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk read a lecture on relations between Orthodoxy and Catholicism at Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary. Hilarion is the head of the Moscow Patriarchate’s department for external church relation. He pointed to the priorities in relations between the Russian Orthodox and the Catholic Church saying: “During the second millennium up to the mid-20th century, the key point in relations between Orthodoxy and Catholicism was the notion of heresy.” Then he added: “A stable improvement in the relations between the two Churches has become visible in the recent years with the election of Pope Benedict XVI in 2005.” According to Hilarion there is a need today for dialogue between the Russian and the Roman Catholic Churches for defending Christian values in the secular world.

All Begins With Jesus Christ

USA

During a Mission Congress in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, told participants that Catholics’ faith and their mission to evangelize “all begins with Jesus Christ”. “Being a Christian does not begin with an ethical decision or a great idea, but with an encounter with a person,” the cardinal said. “To be a missionary is not looking for more people to come inside our galleries. It is to nourish the faith of our flock, ”the Cardinal added.

Imitate the Patience of Our Dear Jesus

Internet

American Life League has published a quote from St. Paul of the Cross: “Be constant in practicing every virtue, and especially in imitating the patience of our dear Jesus, for this is the summit of pure love. Live in such a way that all may know that you bear outwardly as well as inwardly the image of Christ crucified, the model of all gentleness and mercy.”

There is demonstrable proof that people were being butchered under Saddam. Evidently, you are of the opinion that as long as Christians were not the victims of his brutatlity, then we should not be concerned. Sorry, neither I nor the world believes that.

Bypass the PROPAGANDA and befriend an Iraqi Christian in your neighbourhood or better still contact Mor Athanasius Toma Dawod (Metropolitan Patriarchal Vicar, 7-11 Armstrong Road, LONDON W3 7JL, United Kingdom) for a first-hand account of what life was really like for Christians living under Saddam's regime in comparison to the ongoing nightmare that daily afflicts Iraqi Christians still residing in central and southern Iraq. “Woe to you that call evil good, and good evil: that put darkness for light, and light for darkness: that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter”, Isaiah 5:20.

Greetings & grace. The American invasion of Iraq in March 2003 unleashed a hell on earth for the Iraqis - but particularly so - for the Christians who enjoyed a privileged & protected status under the rule of Saddam Hussein. The only reason the "Butcher of Baghdad" was replaced by the Americans was because it was time for NEW MANAGEMENT. Whilst Saddam was "on the run" from Iraqi authorities and "holed up" in Cairo, he was recruited by the CIA in 1952 and was certainly no St Francis of Assisi. That 300,000 Iraqis died under the regime of Saddam, is sad testimony to the long history of covert support by the USA of ruthless dictators around the globe. To read the report issued by the prestigious American John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health estimating a figure of 655,000 fatalities since the 2003 invasion of Iraq is truly shocking (report methodology has been tried and tested over the last 30 years in major areas of conflict; estimated figures invariably prove to be conservative when true number of fatalities can finally be officially confirmed). I now have a number of Iraqi priests living in my neighbourhood informing me as to the true nature of life in Iraq before & after the swift removal of the "Butcher of Baghdad". One Chaldean Catholic priest informed me that 13 members of his family have been dispersed to 13 countries around the globe! This priest and ex-soldier hails from Baghdad City had received a number of death threats from various Islamic militants but continued to courageously serve his parishioners. However - on the last occasion that he was in his church - he was sent up to the roof of his church by his parishioners as they faced off an armed group of Islamic militants. It was only through the pleading of Muslim neighbours that the priest's life was spared. Sadly, this priest's story is just one story amongst the many Iraqis living in exile far from their beloved land. "All our religion is but a false religion, and all our virtues are mere illusions and we ourselves are only hypocrites in the sight of God, if we have not that universal charity for everyone" - Saint Jean-Marie Vianney (Curé d'Ars)

No reliable figures for the number of Iraqi dissidents and Shi'ite Muslims killed during Hussein's reign, though estimates put the figure between 60,000 and 150,000. (Mass graves discovered following the US occupation of Iraq in 2003 suggest that the total combined figure for Kurds, Shi'ites and dissidents killed could be as high as 300,000). Approximately 500,000 Iraqi children dead because of international trade sanctions introduced following the Gulf War.

Christians ought to leave Iraq. However, Syrian Orthodox Archbishop Dawood is out of touch with the facts regarding the murderous Saddam Hussein (aka: The Butcher of Baghdad).
