Pope Met Survivors of Christian Persecution
Vatican
Pope Benedict XVI met with a group of 27 Iraqi Catholics who had survived the October 31 massacre in Baghdad’s church of Our Lady of Salvation. The Iraqi Christians had been transported to Rome for medical treatment at the Gemelli Hospital, thanks for the support of the Italian government. After meeting with the Pope, they also spoke with Archbishop Fernando Filoni, the former apostolic nuncio in Iraq, who now serves as the deputy Secretariat of State.
Condoms for Visitors
South Africa
Catholic Church officials working against AIDS in South Africa are using the words of Pope Benedict XVI to justify the distribution of condoms, according to an AP report. The story quotes a Catholic priest, Father Didier Lemaire, as saying: “What the Pope is saying, many priests have been saying for a long time.” But the Pope never said that priests should do what Father Lemaire apparently does: offer condoms for visitors.
Parenting by the State in Sweden
Sweden
A Swedish district court has sentenced a couple to nine months each in prison and fined them the equivalent of US $10,650 after they admitted to spanking three of their four children as a normal part of their parenting methods. Corporal punishment of children by parents was made illegal in Sweden in 1979, an early step in what a U.S. parental rights lawyer called the nearly total take-over of parenting by the state in Sweden.
The Conservative Pope Can Be A Bit more Liberal
Vatican
John Allen from the National Catholic Reporter writes: "Because of who Benedict is and what he represents, every once in a while he can do things a more 'liberal' pontiff either wouldn't dare or couldn't pull off without splitting the church apart." Allen cites as examples the Pope's efforts to promote dialogue with Islam, encourage action to protect the environment, and open discussion about condom use. On each of these issues, Allen argues, Pope Benedict has surprised and disappointed some more conservative Catholics.

That severe punishment for spaniking your own kids? How then will the Swedes penalize the traitorous and alleged rapist Julian Assange?
