General Audience.

"The one who prays never loses hope, even when he finds himself in difficult and desperate situations." So Benedict XVI addressed the faithful gathered for the traditional Wednesday General Audience at Castel Gandolfo on August 13. "The Holy Scripture teaches us this – he continued - and the Church's history testifies to this." In this context, the Holy Father cited two excellent examples: Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein), and Maximilian Maria Kolbe, two saints who ended their earthly life with martyrdom in the Auschwitz concentration camp. "From a distance, their lives could be considered a failure – the Holy Father concluded - but right in the very moment of their martyrdom, shines the radiance of that Love which conquers the darkness of selfishness and hatred."
