The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and the head of NATO are calling upon the Afghan government to release Musa Sayed, an ex-Muslim Red Cross worker who faces the death penalty for converting to Christianity. Sayed says he has suffered severe mistreatment in his Kabul jail. The nation’s constitution forbids conversions from Islam. Afghan justice department official Jamal Khan says that “the sentence for a convert is death and there is no exception”. Converts from Islam, he added, “must be sentenced to death to serve as a lesson for others.”

The government of Iraq has announced that Pope Benedict XVI may make a visit to Ur, the birthplace of the patriarch Abraham. The Iraqi tourism ministry revealed that the Pontiff had expressed an interest in such a pilgrimage. The papal inquiry, he said, was passed from the Iraqi ambassador at the Holy See to his office. The tourism minister, R. Sumaisem, said that his office had suggested possible arrangements for a trip next year.

Church leaders examining whether a miracle occurred at Jackson Catholic Middle School after a student claimed last Friday to have seen an image of Christ on the host during Eucharistic Adoration - Jackson Citizen Patriot has reported. The psychotherapist Dave Krajewski was later among 10 or 20 people squeezed into the chapel to observe the host. The outline of the male figure, Krajewski said, was a red or orange vibrant color. He had long brown hair and looked like he was wearing a robe. Later the picture disappeared. In the meantime Bishop Earl Boyea of the Lansing Catholic Diocese has been involved in the case.

In regards to this image, people are free to decide for themselves whether they see anything. I have never said that an image of our Lord is present in this Host. All I know is that many children from St. John Elementary School and some from the middle school interpreted this top image to be the face of Jesus. All I know is that many children from St. John Elementary School and some from the middle school interpreted this top image to be the face of Jesus. Keep in mind that the image they saw was much more pronounced or visible earlier in the day. As the day wore on, the image seemed to fade, so that even in the top image, it had diminished and by 8:30 seemed to disappear all together. No one imposed this interpretation on the children. It was something they first saw, and something they themselves concluded, and regardless if we adults see anything, I am not one to take that away from them.
