French state secretary for housing affairs, Benoist Apparus [Bönuá Aparü] wants France to facilitate the construction of mosques in the country, even if that would entail to pay them with public money. Such a decision would need a change to the 1905 law separating Church and state. But 28 members of the Parliament and the minister of budgetary affaires, François Baroin (Frõsua Baruã), have voiced their opposition to such a project. Nevertheless, Apparus wants to bring his proposal on April 2 before the French Parliament.

Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the former vicar of the Rome diocese, has celebrated last Saturday his 80th birthday. Ruini was appointed vicar of Rome in 1991. He remained in that post until his retirement two years ago. Ruini was regarded as a powerful figure in the Italian bishops’ conference. On March 4, Cardinal William Keeler, the retired Archbishop of Baltimore, will be the next cardinal who turns 80 and thus looses his right to participate in the next conclave.

John Allen has written in a Wall Street Journal column that the number of annulments of Catholic marriages in the US has declined. But, according to Allen, this is not the case, because diocesan tribunals are any less likely to declare a marriage null-- despite years of papal pleas to take the permanent bond seriously. Rather, it is because fewer American Catholic couples are bothering to marry in church, and fewer are bothering to seek an annulment before entering into a second marriage.

On Friday, 34 years old Polish Salesian Priest Marek Rybinski was found dead with his throat cut in the garage of the Notre-Dame de la Manouba School, near Tunis. The priest was beaten and murdered. The Tunisian minister of home affairs blamed a group of islamo-fascists for the crime. Since the revolution, Christians are not any more protected by the government the way they were under driven out dictator Ben Ali. Archbishop Laham of Tunis has declared that he has received several anonymous hate-letters.

Who do you think maintains the ancient world-heritage sites which also happen to be Churches, Cathedrals, Abbatial Churches, etc. - yes, the government (Europe that is).
On the other hand, when a country is ashamed or unconcerned with its Christian heritage, e.g. France, Germany, the Low Countries, etc., much room is made for dangerous sects like Islam to put down roots! Why O why won't we learn from the monumental errors of our mediaeval and antique ancestors! Just think of the Crusades and the Moors. Then there is that sterling example of Christian solidity in Pepin the Elder and Charlemagne who were a united front against paganism.....
Hummm...... one wonders whether or not chaps make connexions between their Secondary School and University educations and world situations at present! When will the 'books' come to life for these politicians!

When the old church get dangerous and collapsing, the city council need to demolish it, but it has too to provide a new building to the parish (according to the famous separation of Church and State Law 1905). Right here in my home state we had a father kill his daughter (honor killing), not to mention that at one of their mosques here the FBI had one Muslim leader extradited back to his country because of his known terrorsts ties. Sharia Law is what they want here and everywhere else, and one state here just voted it down, (thank goodness). Wake up...before it's too late, which it may already be. Sometimes it just takes more violence, bombings and beheadings until people "GET IT" !

I would hope that as Catholics our standard of behaviour towards our friends and especially our enemies would be determined by the sovereign standard set by our Lord and Saviour, Jesus the Christ. HolyRope, it is impossible to build a church in Saudi Arabia and near impossible to build a new church building in the State of Israel. As a result of these restrictions on the freedom of religious practice, does it then follow that a total ban on the building of any new mosque or synagogue should be implemented in the United States of America? Regrettably, US presidents have in the past 60 years failed to effectively address the persecution of Christians in Israel, East Timor, Saudi Arabia and many other countries.
