Cardinal Ouellet recommends “Mission and Communication” for next synod theme.

Even before he returned to Canada, Cardinal Marc Ouellet suggested a theme for the next Synod of Bishops. The Archbishop of Quebec City was elected to the post-synodal council, the responsibilities of which include preparing the next world assembly.

"I think the next synod could be—the decision will be done by the Holy Father—but there was a consultation the last day, and personally I insisted on mission and communication. Mission and communication. Because we’re in a new age of communication. So we have to reflect more deeply on that."

Another role of the council will be assisting Pope Benedict in preparing the post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation. While the Church still awaits this final evaluation of the Holy Father, the Cardinal predicted real changes for the faithful of his Archdiocese.

"We need to form our readers and really to encourage them and form them. And I think there will be improvement also in preaching on the long term—it won’t be tomorrow—because on the long term we will have a more spiritual interpretation of Scripture, also on the part of scholars and theologians."

As this past synod's relator general, Cardinal Ouellet was responsible for formulating four major texts. The Cardinal conceded that communicating the work of the synod was difficult given other concerns in the media.

"I think that there were some sort of events, you know, the chaos in financial places of the world. This has distracted to some extent the world press. But precisely because of the chaos, the world would need to hear about the real foundation of the world, which is the Word of God."
