To mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of Caritas Internationalis and to raise funds for its humanitarian work, a vintage train journey was made from Vatican City to Orivieto on 21 May 2011. The 1915 steam locomotive (Gruppo 685) was placed under the patronage of Blessed Pope John Paul II, and each carriage of the 7-carriage train was placed under the patronage of a saint venerated for their service to the poor and vulnerable (St Martin de Porres, Patron of Caritas Internationalis, Car 1; St Mary MacKillop, Car 2; St Catherine Drexel, Car 3; Ss Vincent de Paul & Louise de Marillac, Car 4; St Josephine Bakhita, Car 5; Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Car 6; St Monica, Car 7). The State Parlour Car (Dark blue livery, Car 4) of the Italian Presidential train has been used by Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II, and was previously used by the Italian royal family and Presidents of Italy (State Parlour Car will be used by Pope Benedict XVI in October for his journey to Assisi). A 1930’s Postal Car (complete with hessian sacks) was coupled to the rear of the “Caritas Express”. The steam locomotive, seven carriages and postal car have been preserved by Ferrovie dello Stato (Italian State Railway). Ferrovie dello Stato is an enthusiastic supporter of the Caritas Rome hostel for homeless people which is attached to Rome’s main railway station, Roma Termini. At 0800 hrs, approximately 300 passengers gained access to the Papal Platform to view the vintage steam locomotive and rolling stock. The train driver and stokers were dressed in period uniforms of the 1930s for the occasion. At 1000 hrs, the giant iron doors were opened. Before the train departed Stazione di Città del Vaticano, the train driver and stokers left their steam locomotive to kneel on the Papal Platform for a blessing of the “Caritas Express” by Cardinal Óscar Rodríguez Maradiaga of Tegucigalpa, president of Caritas Internationalis. At 1213 hrs, ahead of time, the “Caritas Express” drew into Orvieto, on a sunny May afternoon after a journey of 62 miles. Interestingly, the Umbrian medieval hill top town of Orvieto is famous for the “Corporal of Bolsena” - a Eucharistic miracle housed in the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary.
