Provincial Sister Replaced

United States

Sister Margaret Timothy Sato has been replaced as the US-provincial of the Daughters of St. Paul in the United States – the Boston Globe has reported. Last year, Sr Sato filed a highly unusual lawsuit against Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley over pension issues. Before she was replaced, the order’s superior general, Sister M. Antonieta Bruscato, flew to Boston from Rome and met with the Cardinal. In that meeting, O’Malley and Sister Bruscato expressed dismay that the US province of the Daughters had sued the Cardinal rather than resolving their differences in a more amicable way. The local sisters seem to be deeply distraught about the leadership change.

No Filth Any More in the Church

Italy

John Allen of the National Catholic Reporter calls a “quiet revolution” the way the Vatican is run under the leadership of Benedict the XVI. He points to the Vatican's assertion of control over Caritas International, and to the suppression of a high-profile Cistercian abbey in Rome. Allen writes: “The suppression of the abbey has been portrayed in the press as a bizarre story, with lurid coverage featuring a "lap-dancing" nun and partying by the monks. The story, he says, is more complex. The abbey of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem had gained a great deal of attention in Rome: hosting very popular events, drawing influential guests. By most popular standards, the abbey's work was successful. Allen notes that there was time in the Church when if someone was doing great good for the church, then allegations of sexual or financial impropriety against them were likely bogus, and taking them too seriously risked encouraging the enemies of the faith. Allen concludes: “Now Benedict XVI has made it clear: No matter how accomplished a person or institution may be, if they're also involved in what the pontiff once memorably called the "filth" in the church, they're not beyond reach.”

Is Pope Benedict A Revolutionary?

Vatican

The Vatican’s assertion of control over the policies of Caritas International should be recognized as a “palace revolution,” writes Jean-Marie Guénois of Le Figaro. He insists that the agency must preserve a distinct Catholic identity and observes approvingly, that Pope Benedict has regained control of “an entire sector of the activity of the Catholic Church.” CatholicCulture.org notes that both Jean-Marie Guénois and John Allen from the National Catholic Reporter use the word "revolution" to describe the impact of Pope Benedict's moves during the past week.

@ACLumsden - Too right! I'm still getting the hard copies of the Breviarium Romanum once Baronius Press releases them.

The above are Allen's words not Benedict's and Allen, as usual, is trying to put a positive spin on a sad situation. As far as the “quiet revolution” goes, I'll believe it when heterodox and/or criminal bishops are disciplined. Until that happens, any talk about a “revolution” are just feel-good words said to appease the 'great unwashed'. Look at what they actually do, not what they say. Parishioners were to respectfully concede to the authority of the church, believing it would act appropriately. Tragically, that didn't happen. Instead we've seen failure after failure repeated over and over throughout the States and the world.

Despite this talk of “quiet revolution” what has changed? Humans, including some of the highest authority figures, are failing the Catholic Church and they refuse to clean house. To add insult to injury, these same bishops several weeks ago commissioned a self-serving puff piece

saying that homosexuality had nothing to do with sexual abuse within the Church. Dear Excellencies, If you continue to take the laity as gullible fools trusting your every word, you will continue to be looked upon as feckless hypocrites.

Buona sera, Doina

@Doina - What an interesting blouse - the unusual buttons give it and the whole ensemble an avant-garde look. 😎
Great that technology is making the ancient Divine Office more easily portable. But what happens if ones phone or tablet runs out of power or gets wet or falls and breaks? The book-form is more resillient I think.... 🧐

Regarding that most unfortunate order of Pauline sisters. Yet again we see how things fall apart when the habit is set aside. But how instructive that the superior general did not wear a habit, but the community in the photo did. Anyway, twill all be a thing of the past soon. We younger folk have utterly rejected that nonsense. 🙂
