Diocesan Ordination in the Old Rite

Italy. Today, archbishop Wolfgang Haas of Vaduz, Liechtenstein, will ordain deacon Daniel Kretschmar a priest. The ceremony will follow the liturgical books of 1962. It will take place in the Roman church of the Society of Saint Peter. On May 13th the instruction „Universae Ecclesiae“ has forbidden diocesan bishops to ordain in the old rite, lest they receive a special permission from the Vatican. For today’s ordination the first such permission was granted.

Double Standard?

Italy

Pope Benedict XVI has called repeatedly for a restoration of the great Catholic tradition in sacred music. But Vatican-watcher Sandro Magister of L'Espresso charges that the commitment to beautiful Gregorian chant and polyphonic music has not been evident in the Pope's own liturgical celebrations, such as the beatification of John Paul II.

Schismatic Community Reconciled

USA

Following years of discussion, the schismatic Christ the King Monastery in Cullman, Alabama, founded in 1984 has been reconciled with the Diocese of Birmingham and the Holy See. In Lent, the two remaining members of the monastery joined the Church. On May 1st, Bishop Robert Baker formally accepted their vows as Benedictine Hermits. They will continue to live in the monastery with the assistance of Father James Isaacson and two Brothers Regular of Saint John Cantius Community of Chicago, Illinois. Mass in the extraordinary form is offered daily at the monastery.

Pope About Franz Liszt

Vatican

On May 28, Pope Benedict XVI attended a concert organized in his honor by President Pal Schmitt of Hungary. The concert celebrated two occasions: Hungary’s assumption of the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union; and the 200th anniversary of the birth of composer Franz Liszt who died as a deacon of the Church. The concert consisted of three pieces by Liszt. After the concert, the Holy Father thanked the performers and commented in particular on a work based on the 13th Psalm. That piece, the Pope said, showed “the quality and profundity of Liszt’s faith.”

The Progressive Fightback Has Begun

UK

Damian Thompson wrote yesterday on his blog that the progressive fightback has begun. Horrified by the Pope’s recent affirmation of Summorum Pontificum, a group of Tabletista liturgical experts have devised “joyful alternatives” to solemn Latin worship and the “stilted” new English translation of the Missal. Damian continues: “My sources suggest that the dance-based liturgy has been choreographed by Tablet Rome correspondent Bobbie Mickens and received the blessing of the much-maligned Archbishop Piero Marini; it may be test-driven in the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, and perhaps also in Westminster, depending on whether an ambitious west London monsignor is appointed an auxiliary bishop. What will this new joyful-but-dignified worship look like?

Doina,
I just noticed that you had 140 ratings for this presentation and the average was only 2 stars. What is unusual about this is not the 2 stars (you've had 2 stars for your last presentation) but the rather large number (140 people) who decided to “rate” you.

Doina,

Catholics (I use the term “Super Catholics”) have a very rigid mind set and any deviation from what they believe to be proper or respectful is frowned upon. During this news update you closed with a dance by Steven Colbert. It was very entertaining and humorous and therein, I believe, was the problem for the Super-Catholics.

Super-Catholics are not noted for the sense of humor. Give them a Latin Mass, a trip by Benedict, chant, another abortion video etc. and they are content. Present something different, entertaining, humorous, something that would (heaven forbid) make them smile and you've got trouble with the Super-Catholics.

Fortunately, there are some of us out here among the masses who enjoyed the little dance at the end of your video. We are the ordinary Catholics who laugh, enjoy life, smile and look for the joy in this very short and often difficult existence.

5 Stars.
