No Encouragement To Say the Old Mass

Scotland

Archbishop Mario Conti of Glasgow, Scotland said in a letter to his priests that there is “no requirement or indeed encouragement for any of us to promote the so-called extraordinary form” of the Mass. The archbishop added: “I venture to suggest that there is no call for it, or pastoral reason to change what has become the settled practice of the archdiocese”. Archbishop Conti’s letter appeared less than a month after publication of Universae Ecclesiae, a new Vatican Instruction urging wider acceptance of the traditional liturgy.

Filipinos Should be Proud for Having No Divorce

Philippines

Bishops across the Philippines are denouncing a measure that would legalize divorce. “Being a country where divorce is not legal is an honor that every Filipino should be proud of,” said Archbishop Oscar Cruz. “Love for the family is the heart of Filipino cultural identity and cannot be destroyed by divorce.” Archbishop Ramon Arguelles of Lipa called upon the nation to reject the example of “de-Christianized countries.” Bishop Juan De Dios Pueblos of Butuan said that “the divorce law would bring immorality in society.”

Make Public Space More Family-Friendly

UK

Prime Minister David Cameron welcomed the recommendations of a new report on the commercialization and sexualization of childhood. In a letter to Reg Bailey, the author of the report, Cameron said: “I particularly welcome those recommendations to make public space more family-friendly by reducing the amount of on-street advertising containing sexualized imagery in locations where children are likely to see it [and to] ensure children are protected when they watch television, are on the internet or use their mobile phones by making it easier for parents to block adult and age-restricted material across all media”.

The First Priests Are Ordained

UK

On Pentecost Sunday more than 50 former Anglican clerics will be ordained as Catholic priests for the English ordinariate of Our Lady of Walshingham. Archbishop Peter Smith of Southwark will perform the first in a series of ordinations. Msgr. Keith Newton, who heads the ordinariate, says that nearly 1,000 lay people have made the move into the Catholic Church. “Every week somebody writes or emails asking how they can join the ordinariate,” he reports.

Divorce destroys society, and the children are lost without being raised by their natural Mother and Father.

Damian Thompson from the Telegraph comments:

Archbishop Conti entirely misunderstands Summorum Pontificum if he thinks that it leaves the “settled pattern” of new and old Masses in his hands; rather, that pattern will be determined by those numbers of the faithful – however small – who ask for Mass according to the Missal of Blessed John XXIII. The Archbishop must accommodate them.

The 54 “defections” from Anglicanism are partially the result of the dissatisfaction with women's ordination and a non-celibate openly homosexual clergy within the Anglican Church. The clerics were "distressed" by the developments in the global Anglican Communion which they found to be "incompatible" with Christian tradition.

This story was covered by numerous news outlets but I found none that mentioned how many of the 54 clerics had wives and families. My feeling is that the majority of them are married and that information is being suppressed. After additional training, married Anglican priests can be ordained as Catholic priests but married Anglican bishops may not retain their higher status.

Once I was talking to a Singaporean girl....and told her that divorce was not allowed in Catholicism. I was expecting her to say how backward that was etc....but she was quite taken with it....and thought it was a lovely thing. 👏
