On January 31, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Fr Gerhard Wagner as the new auxiliary bishop of the Austrian diocese of Linz. But last night the diocese reported that Wagner has asked the pope to withdraw the nomination. The no-longer bishop designate requested the bishop of Linz to pass on the following notification to the media: “In the light of the fierce critique, after consultation with the diocesan bishop and after prayerful consideration I have taken the decision for the good of the diocese to ask the Holy Father in Rome to withdraw my nomination as auxiliary bishop of Linz.”
