Pope Pleading Support for Reconciliation

Vatican

Pope Benedict XVI has written to all the world's Catholic bishops, explaining his decision to lift the excommunications of the bishops for the Society of St. Pius X and pleading for support in his effort to achieve reconciliation. The director of the Vatican press office said in his own statement on March 12 that: "This is an unusual document worthy of great attention". He observed: "Never before in his pontificate has Benedict XVI expressed himself so personally and intensely on a matter of public debate."

A Violation of both the Right to Life and the Consciences of Citizens

USA

Bishop Thomas Olmstead of Phoenix, Arizona has written in his diocesan newspaper that US-President Obama's decision to lift federal restrictions on embryonic stem-cell research violates both the right to life and the consciences of citizens. “We U.S. taxpayers will now be forced to pay, whether we wish to or not, for the killing of our youngest brothers and sisters on the dubious hypothesis that their murders might, in the future, benefit others," the bishop said.

New Archbishop of Westminster

The Congregation of Bishops met yesterday morning to chose the successor of Cardinal Cormack Murphy-O'Connor of Westminister. Times Online reported that according to Italian bloggers Bishop Bernard Longley, a Westminster auxiliary, could have been named for the post. A recommendation will be made to Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday at the earliest. Longley is said to be "mild-mannered, consensual, faithful to Rome, humble, pastorally skilled, of great depth, huge ability, diplomatic, conservative." Others described him as "witty, donnish, posh, terribly nice, far too low-profile, traditional."

A New Chapel at Thomas Aquinas College

USA
On March 7, the archbishop of Los Angeles, Cardinal Roger Mahony, celebrated the Dedication Mass of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity Chapel. The Chapel is the 12th of 15 buildings to be completed on the campus of Thomas Aquinas College. The Chapel is cruciform in shape and features a 135-foot bell tower. In 2003, before construction began, Pope John Paul II blessed the plans for the Chapel. This past fall, the cornerstone of the new building was shipped to Rome to receive the blessing of Pope Benedict XVI.
