Pope Benedict is expected to accept Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s invitation to visit Great Britain, according to media reports. This would be an official state visit including an address to both houses of Parliament.

Senior UK bishops are reported to have written confidentially to the Papal Nuncio warning against the appointment of Birmingham Archbishop Vincent Nichols to replace soon to retire Westminster Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor. The bishops fear that Archbishop Nichols would be a divisive figure, the UK Telegraph says. "I said that I was uncomfortable with someone who is clearly so ambitious," a UK bishop told the newspaper.
