A Profoundly Religious Soul

Vatican

Pope Benedict XVI used his general audience on April 1 to report on his recent trip to Africa. He told the 20.000 people who had gathered in St. Peter's Square that he was impressed by a continent with "a profoundly religious soul which unites the numerous ethnic groups that inhabit it." He also spoke about the challenges posed by poverty and disease, civil wars, the alarming proliferation of "esoteric" religious sects, and the importance of protecting family life.

No Date Set for a Beatification of John Paul II.

Vatican

During his general audience Pope Benedict XVI also told a group of Polish pilgrims that he is praying for the beatification of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II. However, the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints said that there are no imminent plans for the beatification of the Polish Pontiff: "We cannot predict a precise schedule" for the cause, said Archbishop Angelo Amato. He observed that especially in light of the accelerated schedule for the cause, his office wanted to be "particularly thorough" in its research.

Supported by the Media

Scotland

On March 4 this year, Catholic pensioner Ted Atkinson was imprisoned for 12 weeks for the ‘crime’ of sending pro-life material to pro-abortionists. Martin Blackshaw from the Remnant Newspaper writes: “Unlike the national media furore sparked by Bishop Richard Williamson’s Holocaust reductionism, the Atkinson case was passed over in relative silence since the mass murder he deplores—the killing of babies in the womb—is generally supported by the media.”

Occupied Church in Brussels

Brussels

The Church of the Beguines in Brussels has been occupied by "sans-papiers"- illegal immigrants with no permission to work in Belgium. The first occupation was forced by the illegal immigrants who trashed the place. –But now the church is occupied with the full permission of the parish priest. The parish’s biggest event in the year is a Multi-Cultural Picnic in the square in front of the Church. Invasions into catholic Churches in Brussels have begun from the year 2000.
