Yesterday the Church celebrated the fourth anniversary of Pope Benedict’ election. During the recitation of the Regina Caeli at Castelgandolfo the Holy Father expressed his thanks for the greetings he had received. "I desire to express a most cordial 'thank you' to all those - and they are truly many - who have sent me a sign of affection and spiritual closeness in these days.”

Yesterday, many Orthodox Churches celebrated Eastern according to the Julian calendar. In the church of Christ the Savior in Moscow, the main church of Russia, the liturgy was celebrated by the local Patriarch Kirill. For the first time in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church the Gospel was read in 18 languages, including Aramaic and Chinese. In his video address to the country the patriarch said, that the Resurrection of Christ granted us true freedom. It filled the being of man with sense and hope. There is no reason for desperation and fear, for those that believe in Christ – the Patriarch said.

The Franciscans Celebrate

Throughout the year 2009, the Franciscans commemorate the 800th anniversary of their founding. Last week, 1,755 representatives of the four major male Franciscan institutes conveyed in Assisi. The four major male Franciscan institutes are: the Friars Minor, the Capuchins, the Conventuals, and the Third Order Regular. On Saturday, they had an audience with Pope Benedict at Castelgandolfo. In his address the Holy Father said: “I pray that through the intercession of the Poverello Franciscans everywhere will continue to offer themselves completely at the service of others, especially the poor.”

Pope Visits Earthquake zone

On May 1, Pope Benedict XVI will visit the area of L'Aquila, Italy, to view the devastation caused by an earthquake, the London Times reports. Citing tips from relief agencies working in the area, the Times says that the Pope-- who had indicated a desire to visit the stricken people of the Italian region-- will make the trip by helicopter on May 1, which in Italy is a holyday.
