On Sunday morning 20,000 faithful attended the Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI at Jordan’s International Stadium of Amman. The Pope stressed in his homily the "prophetic role" of women in God’s plans. “From the very first pages of the Bible,” the Holy Father said, “we see how man and woman, created in the image of God, are meant to complement one another as stewards of God’s gifts and partners in communicating his gift of life, both physical and spiritual, to our world.” Likewise, Pope Benedict lamented that this God-given dignity and role of women has not always been sufficiently understood and esteemed.

On May 8th, US-born Archbishop Raymond Burke commented on the University of Notre Dame's decision to present President Obama at its upcoming commencement with an honorary Doctor of Law. Archbishop Burke is the Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura. He spoke at the 2009 Prayer Breakfast in Washington. President Obama is a strong supporter of abortion and other anti-life positions. The Archbishop stated: “The purposed granting of an honorary degree” by Notre Dame to President Obama is “the source of the greatest scandal." He continued: “If we as individuals are not willing to accept the burdens” of the Catholic witness to the right to life, “we are not worthy of the name Catholic.”

Condoms are inefficient in the fight against Aids says the Catholic Doctors association, nurses and health care workers in Asia (ACIM-Asia), who also denounce family planning methods through the use of condoms. Yolly Eileen Gamutam, head of ACIM-Asia, is categorical: “Condoms are highly dangerous”. The woman points to the example of Thailand where the widespread promotion and use of condoms has failed. By the end-2003, Thailand registered the highest percentage of HIV/AIDS cases with 570,000 adults and children living with HIV as compared to 9,000 in the Philippines. There were 58,000 AIDS related deaths in 2003 for Thailand while only 500 are recorded in the Philippines.

Archbishop Dominique Mamberti has delivered a message of Pope Benedict XVI to Archbishop Ioan Robu of Bucharest for the 10th anniversary of the historic visit by Pope John Paul II in Romania. The Pope encouraged the Romanian Catholics to pursue the late Pontiff's goal of uniting Eastern and Western Christianity. He noted with pleasure that the Romanian Orthodox community has joined in this week's celebrations of the anniversary, and said that Romania has "a unique ecumenical vocation inscribed in its very roots."
