Last night the Benedict XVI. celebrated Vespers in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. During his homily he said that scientists had conducted carbon dating tests on bone fragments found inside the sarcophagus of Saint Paul and confirmed that they date from the first or second century. The Pope’s conclusion: "This seems to confirm the unanimous tradition that they are the mortal remains of the Apostle." At the end of Sunday’s service in the warm basilica, the Pontiff lost his balance slightly as he slipped on a step on the altar, and was steadied by one of his assistants who was by his side.

The pallium, a thin strip of white wool, is a liturgical vestment worn by metropolitan archbishops. It is conferred on newly appointed archbishops each year on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul.

The patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia, Abuna Pauolos, has announced last Friday the unveiling of the Ark of the Covenant, the container of the tablets of the law that God delivered to Moses. According to the Patriarch it has been hidden away in a church in his country for millennia. Now, the is supposed to be shown in a museum. Father Ray Blake shows is dismay for the decision on his Blog (marymagdalen.blogspot.com): “This may or may not be «the» Ark” – he writes: “But it is venerated as such by countless Orthodox it is kept out of view in an Ethiopian church, touched and viewed only by bishops.”
