«O Emperor, we are your soldiers, but we are before all else servants of God. We owe you military obedience, we owe Him innocence. We receive from you the pay for our labor; from Him we received life. We cannot with you disavow God our Creator, our Lord and your Creator as well, whether you wish it or not. If we are not constrained to offend him by such crimes, we will still obey you, as we always have done; if not, we will obey Him rather than you… We have always fought for justice, for the respect and the life of innocent people: this has been for us the reward for our dangers.We have fought in faithfulness. But this faithfulness, how to preserve it for you, if we refuse it to our God? We have firstly pledged our oath to God, then we have pledged our oath to the Emperor. Be aware that our second oath is illusory, if we violate the first. You order us to persecute Christians. You do not need to seek any further: we are here! … Here we are with weapons in our hands, and we will not resist. Because we prefer to die rather than to kill; perish innocent rather than live guilty. If you still pronounce new decrees against us, if you give new orders, if you bring new threats, fires, tortures, swords, we are ready to undergo all of them. Christians, we declare ourselves: we cannot persecute Christians.»

Saint-Maurice, am Grab der Blutzeugen
Acaunus (Saint-Maurice) liegt gleich vor dem Engpass der Rhone, an einer steilen Felswand. Die Kelten schon errichteten sich hier Grabstätten. Seit dem 4. Jahrhundert folgten aufeinander die verschiedenen Kirchen zu Ehren des heiligen Mauritius und seiner Gefährten. Die als Thebäer bezeichneten Legionäre erlitten hier für ihren christlichen Glauben den Bluttod. Das Gedächtnis an diese mutige Tat machte aus dem Grab und dem 515 erbauten Kloster einen wichtigen Mittelpunkt abendländischer Märtyrerverehrung. Merowinger, Karolinger, Burgunder, Savoyer und selbst Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reiches Deutscher Nation suchten hier christliche und sogar politische Kräfte.

Située en Suisse, l’Abbaye de Saint-Maurice d'Agaune a été fondée en 515 sur le tombeau des saints martyrs thébains Maurice et ses compagnons. Elle est une Congrégation de Chanoines réguliers de saint Augustin active dans la liturgie et le ministère des paroisses, de l’enseignement et des missions.

Layman. Soldier. Officer in a legion of Christian soldiers from Upper Egypt during the reign of Emperor Maximian Herculeus. His legion, as many as 6600 men, was massacred en masse by their own side when they refused to participate in pagan sacrifices prior to battle. One of the Martys of the Theban Legion.

Martirologio Romano: En Agauno (hoy Saint Maurice d'Agaune), en la región de Valais, en el país de los helvecios, santos mártires Mauricio, Exuperio, Cándido, que siendo soldados, al decir de san Euquerio de Lyon, fueron sacrificados por su fe en Cristo, en tiempo del emperador Maximiano, juntamente con sus compañeros de la misma legión Tebea y el veterano Víctor, ilustrando así a la Iglesia con su gloriosa pasión (c. 302).

Etimología: Mauricio = oscuro, sombrío, de Mauritania. Viene de la lengua latina.

Fecha de canonización: Información no disponible, la antigüedad de los documentos y de las técnicas usadas para archivarlos, la acción del clima, y en muchas ocasiones del mismo ser humano, han impedido que tengamos esta concreta información el día de hoy. Si sabemos que fue canonizado antes de la creación de la Congregación para la causa de los Santos, y que su culto fue aprobado por el Obispo de Roma, el Papa.

San Mauricio (llamado también Maurice, Moritz o Mauritius). Era el comandante de la Legión Tebana y murió martirizado a principios del siglo III.

Legión Tebana, integrada sólo por cristianos procedentes de Egipto, recibió órdenes de partir hacia Galia para auxiliar al emperador Maximiano. Aunque combatieron valientemente, rehusaron obedecer la orden imperial de perseguir a los cristianos, por lo que fueron diezmados. Al negarse por segunda vez, todos los integrantes de la Legión Tebana fueron ejecutados. El lugar en que supuestamente tuvieron lugar estos hechos, conocido como Agaunum, es ahora la sede de la abadía de Saint Maurice, en el cantón suizo de Valais.

Esta es la versión más antigua de la historia del martirio de la Legión Tebana, de acuerdo con la carta que Eucherius, arzobispo de Lyon (c. 434 – 450) dirigió al también obispo Salvius. En otras versiones varía la causa del martirio, y los legionarios son ejecutados por negarse a hacer sacrificios a los dioses romanos.
