Description:
The Most Effective Way of Praying for the DeadVatican
To the faithful gathered on Sunday for the Angelus, Pope Benedict XVI presented the communion of saints, as a “beautiful and comforting” reality. The Pope also spoke of yesterday’s All Souls Day. He said that the most effective way to pray for the faithful departed is by offering acts of faith, hope and charity: “In union with the Eucharistic Sacrifice, we can intercede for their eternal salvation, and experience the deepest communion, as we wait to find ourselves together again, to enjoy forever the Love that created and redeemed us" – the Pope said.
Church Opposes Scull-Cult
Bolivia
The Church in Bolivia has called on the faithful to stop using human skulls at special Mass celebrations. This practice is linked by some to occult powers. On November 8th in Bolivia is celebrated the festival ñatitas, or the Day of Skulls. The festival is believed to be pre-Colombian. It sees families adorn skulls, sometimes those of relatives, with flowers, hats, candles and other decoration. This way, the participants seek protection from bad luck by making offerings of coca, cigars or drinks to human crania. La Paz's Archbishop Edmundo Abastoflor warned many of the skulls in fact belonged to "unknown people, obtained by grave robbing and later conserved, donated or even sold." The archbishop urged practitioners of the Andean ritual to "let them rest in peace.
Homosexual Marriage Ceremony in Sweden
Sweden
Over the objections of half of the nation’s Lutheran bishops, the General Synod of the Protestant Church of Sweden has approved a homosexual marriage ceremony. While individual clergy are theoretically free not to perform the ceremony, every parish in the nation must conduct it, making use of visiting clergy if necessary. 87% of Sweden’s 9.1 million residents are Lutheran; 1.5% are Catholic.
A Disappointment to the Catholic Church
USA
Congressman Patrick Kennedy has agreed to meet with Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence to discuss his position on abortion and health-care reform. Last week, the son of the late Senator Ted Kennedy had charged that the American bishops are provoking “dissent and discord” by opposing a health-care reform bill that would allow public subsidies for abortion coverage. Bishop Tobin countered, “Congressman Kennedy continues to be a disappointment to the Catholic Church and to the citizens of the State of Rhode Island.”
