The Catholic Church (starting at the top)would do well by cleaning up this mess IN A PUBLIC WAY. Secrecy always begets suspicion and protects neer-do-wells.criminals need to be turned over for civil action. Innocent people (children) deserve to be protected.

if HE Cardinal Mahony the archbishop who has responsibility for his arch -diocese was in fact concealing the truth from the police, he will be dealt with by the law.
To then portion blame to the late Pope John Paul for abuse in parishes in the western United States ( and then try to put blame on the Holy Father) is a little pathetic and lacking in intelligence don't you think?
What has happened to, largely teenage boys and younger, is so bad it is hard to get ones head around. The bishops who did not report it to the police and did not remove these "priests" have serious questions to answer as do the actual abusers themselves. ( as do the non-clerical abusers who are the vast majority of abusers)
However throwing mud at the Holy Father ( who has a proven track record, when as HE Cardinal Ratzinger, he repeatedly insisted that these "priests" be reported to the authorities) without a shred of evidence is not on. So stop it.

The "War Room" otherwise known as the Vatican with the chief bishop otherwise known as the Pope are very well aware of the ongoing scandal with peodophile bishops like Mahoney. And what have they done about it - NOTHING!! Therefore the likes of JPII and Benedict-Ratzinger are complicit in the sexual abuse of the innocent. In some cases, they have shielded peodiphile priests from prosecution. Saying "I'm sorry" does not fix everything. I believe this is still on going and Benedict-Ratzinger refuses to do anyting about it.

Oh good, Mahoney keeps a 3X5 card on each victim....and.... he prays for him daily....how generous!!!!!! Where was his conscience when he was transferring priests around who were the perpetrators, and being protected with their lies. Where was his conscience when he gave them Absolution in Confession so that they could continue to say Mass at their next assignment/transfer.
While he was "playing chess" with priests in their filthy lives, there were other lives of the young and innocent who were suffering in many ways, and even losing their own souls at that point in their young lives because many will never go back to the Catholic Church. Mahoney, and others like him, should be behind bars so that the world can see that the Church is truly sorry for what it has allowed to happen by ignoring these horrendous sins.
Forgive me for my uncharity, but just an "apology with a smile" is NOT what the innocent youth deserve.
God Bless and heal the victims and EVENTUALLY forgive the perpetrators.
Please God, return us to the real Catholic Church we had over 50 years ago when it was, ONE...HOLY...CATHOLIC.....AND APOSTOLIC.

How many more Mahonys are out there? With exceptions duly noted, it would seem too many bishops are either liguini spined cowards, homo promoters or we eventually discover (like Mahony) that they are a hypocrite, enabler or criminal.
