Motion Against Liturgical Translations Did Not Pass

USA

On Tuesday, a motion from Bishop Donald Trautman of Erie to reject liturgical translations proposed by the Vatican failed to garner sufficient votes from the U.S. bishops. The prelates went on to approve the new liturgical texts. They will be implemented in the U.S. beginning in 2010. Bishop Trautman has headed the bishops' liturgy committee in the past and is a strong supporter of gender-neutral translations. He tried to stop the vote on the new liturgical texts. Trautman claimed that handing the translation of antiphons for the Psalms to the Congregation for Divine Worship was in violation of Church laws, because the Second Vatican Council has established that, in general, translations must be approved by the bishops of the territories where they will be used.

Study Should Not be Separated From Prayer

Vatican

Yesterday Pope Benedict met with teachers and students of Roman ecclesiastical universities and the assembly of the International Federation of Catholic Universities. In his address the Holy Father stressed that “it is important to remember that the study of sacred sciences should never be separated from prayer, from union with God, and contemplation.” Then he added: “Catholic universities, uniting faith and reason, should provide the world with "wisdom capable of directing man in the light of his first beginnings and his final ends.”

The Court Should Also Abolish the Death Penalty for Babies

Russia

The Russian Constitutional Court has banned death penalty in the country forever, Interfax- religion reports. Recalling the Christian commandment "Do not kill," Archpriest Dimitry Smirnov, the head of the Synodal Department for Relations with the Armed Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies said: “A person who has committed a grave crime and is serving his sentence in prison has a chance to repent.” Then he added: "I'm also against abortion. It's when my fellow citizens are killed in their mothers' wombs with the taxpayers' money. It's the death penalty for no crime at all. It would be good if the Constitutional Court also abolished the death penalty for babies."
