Moldova

Commenting on the pope’s resignation the Moldavian private TV Channel ProTV Chisinau remembered Benedict XVIth as the pope who – quote – “encouraged us to use condoms.” The channel added: “Before that the Church vehemently denied the use of any contraceptive means.” Moldova is an Orthodox country.

Pope Benedict resigns in a moment when a new debate opens regarding the new English translation of the Roman Missal. Vatican Insider reports that the experience on either side of the Atlantic, is practically identical: in almost every church, the introduction of the new translation has been “domesticated”. Rarely does the celebrant follow the new text word for word. For example the famous “for many” is being changed in the best case to “for many and many.” The Tablet launched a survey to investigate this situation in the US, UK, and Ireland. It came to the conclusion that 70 % of the clergy are unhappy with the translation. Among clergy there was strong opposition to the word 'consubstantial' in the Creed (67%), 'for many' (63%) and 'chalice' (61%).

Rorare-coeli has invited its readers to choose a special and additional penance. It is to be offered for the government of the Church and the heavy responsibility that will be placed upon the shaky College of Cardinals in the upcoming weeks.

Poland

Commenting the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Stanislaw Dziwisz, Cardinal of Cracow and John Paul II’s secretary until his death in April 2005, said: “Pope Wojtyla decided not to step down from the Throne of Peter even as he neared the end of his life, because “he was convinced that one doesn’t come down from the cross.” Apparently, John Paul II even consulted the then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who was a close collaborator of his, about his decision to continue as leader of the Church despite his heavy illness.

Wrong again Cannoli. You don't know what are you talking about. It wasn't any metaphor. I saw this statement on TV, you didn't. Cardinal only repeated what JPII thought and said about his pontificate. Cardinal said this because he commented an opinion from a journalist. This was not a comment on Pope Benedict's resignation. Here is exactly what he said:

Journalist: "Age and health were not the reason to abdicate for John Paul II"

Card Dziwisz: "I was with the Holy Father John Paul II to the last beat of his heart. I saw on the monitor when his heart stopped. He lead the Church until the end, because he thought it all flowed from his conviction, his believe and faith that that one doesn’t come down from the cross. So he said." pointed cardinal. (Polish)

Gloria introducing: "Commenting the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI..." is false. As you can see cardinal has commented the journalist's opinion only.

Cannoli, you have insulted the Cardinal and I would say:

There would have been no controversy if dizzy Cannoli would have simply kept his mouth shut which is exactly what he should have done.

Vatican Insider is reporting what Lombardi said which does NOT necessarily mean that what he said is totally accurate. Realizing the terrible optics of Dizzy's comment, it's obvious now that Lombardi, Polish news outlets and Dizzy himself are in full CYA mode to walk back what clearly was a huge blunder.

But, for the sake of discussion, even if there was NO disrespect in any of his comments and even if the timing of his comments were perfectly considerate of Benedict's impending resignation and even if Dizzy went on to praise Benedict, this does not take away from his original quote in which he compares JP-II and the Cross of Christ.

Stanislaw Dziwisz, Cardinal of Cracow and John Paul II’s secretary until his death in April 2005, said Pope Wojtyla decided not to step down from the Throne of Peter even as he neared the end of his life because “he was convinced that one doesn’t come down from the cross.” Vatican Insider.

To repeat what I wrote earlier,Dziwisz's pathetic metaphor comparing JP-II with Christ's redemptive act on the Cross demonstrates mega-stupid idiocy for which there can be NO defense either from Lombardi or Zenit. It was an idiotic comment, theologically heretical and totally inappropriate under any circumstances especially at this time considering the context.

...waiting with bated breath for your next boring video, Timmy.

The declaration made by Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz “is totally respectful” and full of Pope Benedict XVI’s love for Poland.
The cardinal “used very carefully thought out and beautiful words” in the comments to Vatican Radio. I have absolutely no reason to say that Cardinal Dziwisz expressed disagreement or disapproval toward Benedict XVI’s choice,” Fr. Lombardi underlined.

Dziwisz said what he said and now, because of the heat generated from his comment, he ( and/or his Polish supporters) backtrack. Regardless, considering the timing, Dziwisz' comment was at least inappropriate if not stupid or both.

3. Before the conversation with journalists he made a statement of the resignation of Benedict XVI. He said many good words about the present Pope: "I understand the motivation of the Holy Father. ...I say my thank you to the Pope for all he did for the Church, for the Polish Church and people... Personally, I will be faithful to him and grateful for all what I got from Him. ..."

4. "one doesn’t come down from the cross" is that what John Paul II thought about the possibility of His resignation. This is not a comment on Pope Benedict XVI.

5. Is the editor of Gloria.TV looking for a new journalist?

I reflected on this news from Moldova. The thing is: It is not only inexact journalism from this Pro Tv something (because the Pope didn't really allow the use of condoms). It is about how the world interprets what the Church says. That's why all Church hierarchy should express itself very clearly and very unambiguously, so that there is no space for misinterpretations. indeed, one can step down if he made suitable preparations for a successor. And here I see also big problems.
From the apparent urgency in his resignation, time is likely NOT on Benedict's side in his decision. The point is, how dare you insinuate that Benedict is resigning for anything but the purest of motives and for the good of the universal Church?

If you're a Catholic, you ought to keep you ill-informed opinions and your negative comments about the Vicar of Christ to yourself. You know nothing about what he is or what he may currently be going through especially with respect to his physical or mental health.

Everything, indeed, is in the hands of God except for ignorant comments. Those are exclusively in the hands of the ignorant commenter.

Well, I think one may "step down from the cross", if he fulfilled everything he began. The problem is: with Pope Benedict it is not the case. And I mean hear the talks with the SSPX, the implementation of the Summorum Pontificum or the introduction of the new English translation.

John Paul's illness was of the body alone - his mind was intact but Pope Benedict has hinted that his illness is affecting his mental abilities. In such a situation a pope is open to serious error or even manipulation. If the captain cannot govern his ship he needs must pass the burden on to one who can. We must never forget that Christ is still in charge and He will give us, with the cooperation of the cardinals, someone to steer the barque of Peter in the right direction. 👌

1) Not only is Dziwisz's metaphor comparing JP-II with Christ's redemptive act on the Cross demonstrate mega-stupid theological idiocy, it is deeply insulting to the present pope and to Catholics everywhere.

2) If what Ditzy says is true and JP-II thought that “one doesn't come down from the cross” this doesn't automatically mean that that is the wisest course of action both for the person making the statement and for the Church he leads. If a man becomes or is becoming unable physically or mentally to fulfill the rigorous duties of his office, the most reasonable course of action is -- and indeed the man has an obligation to --“come down from his cross” and make suitable preparations for a successor who will be able to carry on effectively which is precisely what Benedict is now doing.
