A Sacrifice of Inestimable Price

Vatican

On the First Sunday of Advent in 1969, the New Missal entered officially into force. At the general audience that took place three days earlier, Pope Paul VI explained the incumbent liturgical reform. He declared to be aware that the righteous and even the priest would be irritated by the reform. He said: To those who know the beauty, the power, the expressive sacrality of Latin, its replacement by the vulgar language is a great sacrifice: we lose the discourse of the Christian centuries, we become almost intruders and desecrators in the literary space of sacred expression. It is a sacrifice of inestimable price.”

Minarets Forbidden in Switzerland

Switzerland

Swiss voters have surprised pundits by approving a constitutional ban on the construction of new minarets. Four of the nation’s 160 mosques currently have minarets -- the spires from which Muslims are traditionally called to prayer. Turnout was high at 53%, as was the margin of victory: nearly 58% of voters approved the initiative. The nation’s government and bishops had opposed the initiative. An international boycott of Swiss goods and an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights are under discussion. The nation of 7.5 million is 44% Catholic and 4% Muslim.

A Shawl for the Pope

Vatican

Yesterday, the president of Peru, Alan Garcia presented the pope with a program for disarmament in Latin America. During his visit to the Vatican Garcia explained to Benedict XVI the measures that the Peruvian government is proposing to eradicate poverty and promote collaboration with the Church. The president gave the pope a shawl made from vicuña wool and told him it could come in handy when it’s cold in Rome. The pope in turn gave the president medals from his pontificate.

Future President of Swiss Bishops’ Conference Against Celibacy

Switzerland

Bishop Norbert Brunner of Sion in Switzerland says that married men should be allowed to be priests in the Catholic Church and that celibacy should be abolished. Brunner takes over as head of the Swiss Bishops Conference at the start of next year. He told the Neue Zürcher Zeitung am Sonntag newspaper that most Swiss bishops were in favour of such a move. He had proposed it to Rome several times, but admitted that he had, as yet, been unable to push his solution forward. Bishop Brunner heads the diocese in which the Econe seminary of the society of Saint Pius X. is located.
