Bishop Frederick Henry of Calgary in Canada has suspended all activities of the Latin Mass communities in his diocese. According to Rorate Caeli Blogspot this is due to a pseudo-scientific and anti-Canonical order mandating the non-reception of the Eucharist on the tongue due to concerns related to the transmission of the swine flue. Yesterday, the Holy Father celebrated Mass with the members of the International Theological Commission, which has its yearly assembly in these days. The Mass was offered in the Pauline Chapel of the Apostolic Palace. The chapel’s altar was repositioned this July so that Mass can be celebrated both versus populum and versus Deum. Pope Benedict availed himself of this new possibility and celebrated Mass ad orientem. Thereby he sent an important signal, underlining that this liturgical orientation is possible and even encouraged.

Rep. Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island has pledged to offer no further comment on his controversy with Bishop Thomas Tobin of Provicence. The bishop has request Kennedy in 2007 to refrain from receiving Holy Communion because of his support for abortion. “These are personal issues of faith for me,” Kennedy said. “I’m not going to indulge in this debate anymore. It’s really for me about what my constituents are most interested in now, and that is getting a health care bill passed that helps improve their lives.”

The French Jesuit Pierre Blet has died on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. at the age of 91 in a Roman hospital after a heart attack. Fr. Blet was a famous Church historian, Professor and great defender of the memory of the Servant of God Pope Pius XII. He has never ceased celebrating the old Mass and was a friend of the Priestly Society of Pius X. Once in about 1998 when Pope John Paul II was chatting with journalists on a flight he was asked about Pius XII and his answer was simple: "Read Blet."
