The Pope with his hand luggage: Pope Francis spent all day Monday flying to Brazil. The Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta came to the airport to send him off. When boarding the Airbus, the Holy Father carried his own black briefcase on board. The Alitalia plane took off shortly before 9 am. The flight time between Rome and Rio is about twelve hours with his arrival in Rio at 4 pm local time. Tuesday is a day of rest before the Holy Father will officially begin his travel program with a visit to Aparecida on Wednesday.
