“Pope Francis should give us a break from this flurry of papal saints” – writes Paul Vallely in the anti-Church British Guardian. According to him, elevating John XXIII and John Paul II to sainthood is political and divisive. It's time the church closed its dead popes society. Vallely’s proposal: “If we are to have saints they should, as John Paul II to his credit understood, be drawn from the ranks of lay women and men not just the ordained. Pope Francis should make it clear that, after this, there will be no more fast-tracked papal saints. Or, at very least, put the whole business on hold for a couple of centuries.”

A recent Cambridge study shows identical brain activity in addicts to pornography, drugs and alcohol according to The Sunday Times of Sept. 22. Neuropsychiatrists at Cambridge found that the portion of the brain stimulated in drug and alcohol addicts lights up in the same way as it does for porn addicts viewing explicit materials. The brains of those who are not in the habit of using porn did not react in the same manner to the same materials. Elizabeth Ministry International has now developed exercises to help people to unlearn poor habits and to re-learn healthy habits, in terms of their sexuality and relationships with other people.

The writer and former Catholic convert Rod Dreher has explained in times.com why he left the Church again. Dreher writes: “As the abuse scandal raged, one Ash Wednesday, I attended mass at my comfortable suburban parish and heard the priest deliver a sermon describing Lent as a time when we should all come to love ourselves more.” He comments: “If I had to pinpoint a single moment at which I ceased to be a Roman Catholic, it would have been that one.” He adds: “By then, I was a father and did not want to raise my children in a church where sentimentality and self-satisfaction were the point of the Christian life.”

In his article, Dreher also speaks about Pope Francis – quote: “I’m an ex-Catholic whose decision to leave the Catholic Church is not challenged by Francis’ words, but rather confirmed.” He explains: “Though I agree with nearly everything the pope said last week in his interview and cheer inwardly when he chastises rigorist knotheads who would deny the healing medicine of the Church to anyone, I fear his merciful words will be received not as love but license.”And: “The “spirit of Pope Francis” will replace the “spirit of Vatican II” as the rationalization people will use to ignore the difficult teachings of the faith. If so, this pope will turn out to be like his predecessor John XXIII: a dear man, but a tragic figure. Gloria.tv wonders why Rod Dreher, who left the church, still feels the need to comment on Catholic issues? Perhaps Rod is the tragic figure and not Pope John XXIII?
