Atheist Eugenio Scalfari: My friends think it is you want to convert me.
Pope Francis replies: Proselytism is solemn nonsense, it makes no sense…
To the (apparently) ludicrous notion that the Vicar of Christ may (get this) want an atheist with whom he has developed a cordial relationship to convert to the one true faith, the pope promptly replied, “Proselytism is solemn nonsense, it makes no sense.”
Are you paying attention? The pope is saying that the very idea that he may harbor a desire to see Scalfari convert to the Catholic faith is “nonsense!” That’s the context, like it or not.
Let’s revisit the mission of the Church as given by Christ.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever that I have commanded you. (Matthew 20:19-20)
That’s it, and the Church has, until very recently, been doing exactly this by means of teaching, preaching and exhorting from …More

There is also the possibility of a so called pastoral solution to the problem of divorced Catholics who have remarried without an annulment. There are two possible approaches.

1. Let the individual conscience decided whether the first marriage was actually invalid. The problem with this approach is that marriage is a matter of external forum--thus invalidity also must be a matter of external forum, i.e., marriage tribunal.

2. First marriages were attempted by people who were not capable of consenting to the bond. There is a real possibility that this is true. The problem with this approach is that it is based on recognizing officially what Latin lovers have been saying for years: Vernacular, versus populum liturgy has destroyed the cult.

I don't like what the pope has been saying, and frankly, I'm tried of having to explain what he says. He insists on using a certain angle to approach the Church, invoking the Divine Mercy but only vaguely referring to why man needs it.
It is, not, however, heresy.

It is the lost sheep approach, the problem with which is that it is aimed at a specific non Catholic audience but tends to ignore the flock--and even worse, seems to think poorly of lovers of Latin liturgy.

One other point: He is at work re-structuring the Curia, which I hope will end he Dictatorship of the Secretariat, an invention of Paul VI.

Q What does Francis say the Church should be doing instead of converting people? A "Listening to needs."
Q How could Francis allow divorced & remarried Catholics to receive Communion? A "Pastoral solution [wink!]"
Q What does Francis teach about "doctrinal security" for Catholics? "Exists no more!"

The tendency is to use proselytism generally--an attempt to convert someone.
The pope, however, is using proselytism in a specific, pejorative meaning: impersonal and offensive. The North American Jesuit martyrs were trying to convert Indians, but I don't think Papa Francesco would consider them to have been proselytizing.More
