Abide in me.

On February 12th, the Feast of Our Lady of Confidence, Benedict XVI visited the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary, where he met with approximately 190 seminarians, not only coming from the Roman Major Seminary, but also the Roman Seminary Minor, the Almo Collegio Capranica, the Redemptoris Mater Seminary and the Seminary of Our Lady of Divine Love.

After a reading from the 15th chapter of John’s Gospel, the Holy Father held a Lectio Divina to comment on the Gospel passage, focusing in particular on the words “abide” and “observe”. “Obedience”, said the Pope, is the second level of our relationship with God, who gives us first His love.

Benedict XVI said that Christianity is not moralism. God’s love precedes our action; ethics is a consequence of being. We must not act out of outward obedience; we must rather act out of our new being. Observing his commands, said Benedict XVI, is the sign of our abiding in his love.
