Survey: one-third of Latino Catholics in the U.S. identify as Charismatic (Video)

For members of the Charismatic Catholic movement, worship centers on establishing a personal connection with God.

According to a recent survey conducted by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health, about one-third of Latino Catholics in the U.S. identify as Charismatic. For non-Latino Catholics, this number is closer to one-tenth, according to a 2007 poll by the Pew Research Center.

Marvin Rodriguez says he joined the movement seven years ago. "It means happiness. We like to express ourselves in a different way, like applauding, laughing and joy," says Rodriguez.

There are also miraculous healings and prophesying. It's very similar to what you'd expect to see at a Pentecostal church — where the number of Latino converts is growing quickly.

In 1969, the Ranaghans published Catholic Pentecostals, the first book detailing the history of this renewal movement and articulating its theological implications. They linked baptism in the Spirit to a renewal of the sacraments of initiation. The book was translated into several languages, and Kevin Ranaghan traveled extensively, both in and out of the United States, to spread the news about this Pentecostal outpouring in the church. His travels brought him into contact not only with Catholic groups throughout the world, but also with groups of Protestants from Pentecostal, mainline, and evangelical streams of Christianity. Ranaghan served as a bridge between Catholics and those from other denominations who, for the first time in history, were experiencing a simultaneous and similar renewal in the Spirit.

I read that "Catholic" Charismatic pioneer Kevin Ranaghan told 7,500 Catholics in the audience that barking like dogs and oinking like pigs is a true manifestation of the Holy Spirit. 🤦

And before any of you tortilla flippers starts quoting popes who approved of this nonsense, remember this.
You run a risk of error by just going along with everything simply because the Pope made a prudential judgment about one thing or another.

Popes are not infallible in their prudential judgments, and this looney movement has been a blind spot for them over the recent decades. There’s a definite disconnect between the orthodoxy of many who are attached to and/or sympathetic with the charismatic movement inside the Catholic Church, and the questionable, at the very least, orthopraxy of these charismatic “worship” services.

That's true, I believe that. God is allowing us to use our Free Choice as He has given us. And what a mess we have done with it!

I think Scripture has an answer as to why God would allow these "ambiguities" to occur. In short, there is an interesting working principle in Scripture.
As a punishment for your sin, God will allow you to pursue, and be condemned by, what you sinfully desire.

As a punishment for your sin, God will allow you to pursue, and be condemned by, what you sinfully desire.

This is what I believe happened at Vatican II. The progressivist bishops and theologians sought for a way to push their heterodox ideas into the Church, so God allowed them to do so, as a witness and judgment against them. He would allow the Council to have its "ambiguities" so that those who would interpret them contrary to nineteen centuries of established Catholic dogma, would lead themselves into sin, and ultimately into God's judgment.

Unfortunately, as is always the case, the sheep suffer for what the shepherds do wrong, and as a result, we have all been wandering in the spiritual desert of liberal theology for the past 40 years. (Article from Catholic Family News, Feb 2003, by Robert Sungenis)
