Smear Campaign: The Holy See has denied that there is a Vatican investigation against the former Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. The anticlerical German tabloid Bild had claimed that Bertone had allegedly embezzled 15 Million Euros. The media have been engaging for years in a smear campaign against Bertone who was the right hand of Pope Benedict XVI.

Removed: The Pope has named archbishop José Luis Mollaghan of Rosario, Argentina, as a member of the Vatican Commission that deals with sexual abuses. Mollaghan belongs to the Catholic wing of the episcopate. Argentinian media consider the appointment as a removal rather than a promotion. In December, the Vatican, encouraged by the liberals, had ordered an investigation against Mollaghan. He wants to work for the Commission in Argentina and to travel to Rome only when necessary.

Cancer: 62 years old Bishop Robert J. McManus of Worcester has been diagnosed with prostate cancer six weeks ago. McManus announced his diagnosis in a letter to his priests. He will undergo surgery as his treatment route for the cancer on June 26.

Demission: The Superior General of the Jesuits, Father Adolfo Nicolas, has announced that he will resign in 2016 when he turns 80. Nicolas also announced the convocation of the Order’s 36th General Congregation which will elect his successor. The Jesuits have experienced a sharp decline in numbers since the Council from over 30,000 in the 1960s to fewer than 18,000 today.
