Attorneys Manipulate News About the Church

Vatican

In an interview that appeared on the PBS television show NewsHour, Cardinal William Levada, prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, criticized media coverage of the clerical abuse scandal. He also defended Pope Benedict and held up the US bishops’ 2002 Dallas charter as a model for dealing with the issue. “I don't want to scapegoat anybody or have a conspiracy theory, but I do think that in the American media in particular the question has been driven by information given by the plaintiffs' attorneys who are looking for ways to involve the Pope somehow in a court process or something like that, which are I think bound to be futile but nevertheless I think that has driven a fair amount of the media coverage, if I may say so,” said Cardinal Levada.

An Excellent Opportunity For Catechesis

Vatican

Yesterday the Holy Father lunched with the members of the Vox Clara Committee, the Committee of consultation on questions regarding the celebration of the Roman Rite in the English language. The committee is annexed to the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. At the end of the lunch the Holy Father gave a short address in which he welcomed the news that the new translations would soon be ready for publication. He underlined that they will present an excellent opportunity for catechesis, especially on the Mass as sacrifice. This the new translations present much more faithfully, in accord with the original texts.

Two-Year Ban on Fishing in the Sea of Galilee

Israel

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Sunday a two-year ban on fishing in the Sea of Galilee, from where Jesus called Peter and his brother Andrew to be his disciples, and Matthew’s Gospel records him walking on water. The ban was called for to help preserve fish stocks, which have plummeted dramatically. The Government blames fishermen for using nets with smaller holes than are permitted by law, resulting in huge hauls of young fish that have not had a chance to breed.

Defamatory Message Against a Priest Fined

Brazil

GOOGLE has been fined 8500 dollars in Brazil after an anonymous Internet user posted defamatory messages on one of its sites against a priest, calling him a "paedophile". A court in the state of Minas Gerais ruled in favour of the 54-year-old priest after rejecting Google's argument that it was not responsible for what users posted on its Orkut social networking site.
