First since 1970

Philippines

On April 27 feast of St. Peter Canisius, Bishop Antonio Tobias Novaliches in the Philippines, offered a Solemn Pontifical Mass in the convent chapel of the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate in his diocese. He was assisted by Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate. This Mass is only the second Solemn Pontifical Mass to be celebrated by a Filipino bishop since September 14, 2007. It is also the first old Mass to be offered by a Filipino Ordinary in his own diocese since 1970.

A Positive and Fruitful Tradition

Spain

The discipline of priestly celibacy is a "positive and fruitful tradition," Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone told a Spanish television interviewer. He added: "There is no direct link between celibacy and the deviant behavior of certain priests." Cardinal Bertone conceded that celibacy is not "untouchable," and exceptions to the general rule of priestly celibacy already exist in the Catholic Church. But the calls for an end to clerical celibacy, as a response to the sex-abuse crisis, are misguided, he said. The cardinal explained that "it is the failure to remain celibate that gradually degrades the life of a priest."

Reasons for Hating the Church

Times

The enthusiasm of the New York Times for criticism of the Catholic Church is understandable, veteran religion journalist Kenneth Woodward writes in Commonwealmagazine. Woodward gives his reason: The Times "is not just the nation’s self-appointed newspaper of record. It is, to paraphrase Chesterton, an institution with the soul of a church." The Times, Woodward explains, is like a secularized religious body, promoting its own doctrine. "Again like the Church of Rome, the Times exercises a powerful magisterium or teaching authority through its editorial board."

Introducing Priests and Lay People to Real Catholicism

UK

The insults directed at the Pope by Foreign Office officials raise questions about the papal visit to Britain in September. The Catholic Herald proposed in an article to make the Pope’s visit a pastoral rather than a state one. In his blog journalist Damian Thomson gives the following arguments for this: The Catholics of Britain know very little about this Pope and his wonderful programme for renewing the worship of the Church. He continues: That’s because the respective hierarchies of England and Scotland have done so little to promote this papacy. A pastoral papal visit whose ceremonial details were firmly under the control of Mgr Marini could work a small miracle, by introducing priests and lay people to real Catholicism.
