Incompetent Reporting About Catholic Church

USA

A front-page story in the May 31 edition of The New York Times examined how vocations directors and seminaries in the US are screening prospective seminarians in light of the Congregation for Catholic Education’s 2005 document. The document reaffirmed the Church’s longstanding discipline barring those with homosexual tendencies from ordination. “We have no gay men in our seminary at this time,” said a psychologist who screens prospective seminarians for the Diocese of Brooklyn. The Times claimed that the Diocese of Brooklyn is “one of the more successful” dioceses in attracting vocations. A 2005 Catholic World Report study, however, found that it was one of the most vocation-poor dioceses in the nation.

Those Attempting to Confer Holy Orders on Women are Excommunicated

USA

Bishop Martin Amos of Davenport in Iowa has reminded Catholics in his diocese that “those who attempt to confer Holy Orders on women are excommunicated, as are the women who attempt to receive Holy Orders. This includes the attempted ‘ordination’ for a deacon, priest or bishop.’” Bishop Amos issued his statement because Mary Kay Kusner-- whom the Iowa City Press-Citizen describes as a “devout Catholic” - is scheduled to “to become the first female Catholic Womanpriest in Iowa” on June 13.

Solidarity and Reparation

Vatican

On Saturday morning an hour of Eucharistic Adoration was observed in the Basilica of St. Peter's. Priests, nuns, seminarians and lay faithful participated. Following the solemn event, Vatican official Monsignor Charles J. Scicluna emphasized the value of children to God and "true" disciples and admonished those who have committed harmful acts against them. The initiative, promoted by students from the Pontifical universities in Rome, was carried out in the chapel behind St. Peter’s central altar. According to organizers, the event was held to show solidarity for the Pope and pray for “reparation for abuses committed by priests and for the healing of this wound within the Church.”

Hildebrand Conference in Rome

Italy

Last week a 3-day conference organized by the Hildebrand Legacy Project was held in Rome. The topic of the conference was "The Christian Personalism of Dietrich von Hildebrand: Exploring His Philosophy of Love." His widow, Dr. Alice von Hildebrand, a philosopher herself, gave the audience the most integral look of the conference into the source of his philosophy. "If you find a line which does not agree with the Church, burn it all!" were the instructions Catholic philosopher Dietrich von Hildebrand gave to his wife before he died in 1977.

hOW IRONIC THAT BISHOP MARTIN AMOS SPEAKS UP ABOUT ORDAINING WOMEN, WHEN AT HIS CONFERENCE at St. Adelberts in Ohio, he had a suit clad feminist nun acting as though she were a priest, while Bishop Amos had her go through certain things a priest does during Mass to familiarize to the people WHY they do what they do. He later made a comment to all present that the "nun" made mad a wonderful "priest". All had a laugh at the same time cheering in the church. There are FEW of American bishops that are trustworthy as well as obedient to the Holy Father. They allow the priests and pastors do get away with so much abuse, it is awful...And too because many of the bishops themselves are modernists.

I get the impression that US bishops tend to do better than those in Europe. I hope I am not wrong on that assessment.
