Where will Cardinal Newman be Beatified?

UK

English Church officials have denied reports that the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman could be rescheduled. Pope Benedict XVI is due to preside at the beatification ceremony during an outdoor Mass at Coventry in September. But organizational troubles with the papal trip have given rise to rumors that the beatification could take place in Birmingham, at a site that would not accommodate as many people. A spokesman for the Birmingham archdiocese has denied those reports. Still, Damian Thompson of the Daily Telegraph writes that tour organizers are not yet selling tickets for the Coventry, explaining that the beatification site has not been confirmed.

Protect Animals by Sacrificing Human Embryos

EU

The Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community has expressed a warning. It concerns a directive that would call for protection of animals used in laboratory tests in the European Union, but might encourage the use of tissues harvested from human embryos. The Bishops noted that the proposed directive says that living animals should not be used for tests if any alternative is available. The text of the directive does not exclude the use of tests on tissues from human embryos. The net result of such a policy, the bishops points out, could be to protect animals by sacrificing human embryos.

Father Curran Still Dissenting

USA

Father Charles Curran, now 76, has reiterated his support for homosexuality, contraception, and divorce in the June 5 issue of Newsweek. Father Curran is a longtime dissenter who was removed from a Catholic University teaching position in 1986 at the behest of Cardinal Ratzinger. Curran said that clerical celibacy has led to a loss of priestly vocations. He concludes by calling for “rewriting the celibacy laws as an initial edit-- a change on the way to redressing the multitude of other needed reforms,” including the ordination of women.

Receiving the Eucharist Unworthily Can Be Dangerous

Malta

The Bishop of Gozo in Malta has insisted that all those committing mortal sin - and not just cohabitation - may not receive Holy Communion. In a homily to mark the feast of Corpus Domini, Mgr Mario Grech referred to the current controversy on Holy Communion. "We are living at a time where we give the appearance of being religious, but we are losing the sense of what is sacred and this is leading to abuse of the Eucharist," Mgr Grech said. He pointed out that St Paul had warned in Corinthians 11 that anyone receiving the Eucharist without deserving to, would be condemning himself.
