André Campra was born in Aix-en-Provence, in Southern France, in 1670. He received his musical and religious training in this city, and became a priest in 1678. In 1694, he was named "maître de musique" (music director) at the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. The following year, he published his first volume of "petits motets", probably composed while he was still living in Southern France. These fourteen short and intimate works are for one, two or three voices, and basso continuo, with the addition of two violins for three of them. "Insere domine calls for an important participation of these instruments, and depicts the path of the soul, which is in turn failing, desiring (repeated rising scales), then exhilarated (melisma)." - Catherine Cessac (translation: Marc D.) Allow me to honour you, not in words, not by tongue, but in deeds and truth. Let faith grow in me, nurture my hope; may my soul die pierced by the arrows of your love. How beautiful you are, my beloved! How sweet, the pleasures you give! Set my heart ablaze with the flames of your love. You alone are my king, my joy and my desire. French translation: Mets, Seigneur, mets dans ma poitrine le sentiment de ton amour. Donne-moi de t'honorer non par les mots, non par la langue, mais en actes et en vérité.
