US-Bishops Criticize Book on Moral Theology

USA

The Committee on Doctrine of the US-bishops has issued a 24-page critique of the book The Sexual Person: Toward a Renewed Catholic Anthropology. The book was published in 2008 by Creighton University theologians Michael G. Lawler and Todd A. Salzman. Lawler is professor emeritus. Salzman is the current chair of the theology department at the Nebraska Jesuit university. The committee was chaired by Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington. It found that the book contains “erroneous conclusions” on the morality of homosexual acts, premarital sex, contraception, and artificial insemination.

Fight Poverty – Don’t Eliminate the Poor

UN

Cardinal Peter Turkson has addressed a summit of heads of state and government on the Millennium Development Goals. The Cardinal is president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. He warned against using the goals as a pretext for population control. In 2001, United Nations member states had pledged to meet eight goals by 2015, including reducing by half the number of persons who live on less than $1 per day. Cardinal Turkson said: “Millennium Development Goals should be used to fight poverty and not to eliminate the poor!”

Same-Sex-Adoption Subject Children to Psychological Violence

Italy

The Secretary of State for Family Policy in Italy, Carlo Giovanardi, has stated in an interview that he believes there is a connection between adoption by same-sex couples and the increase in the human trafficking of minors. Giovanardi noted that “where the adoption by gay couples is allowed, such as in the U.S. and Brazil,” the countries have exploded with the “buying and selling of children.” “To impose two parents of the same sex on a child is to subject that child to psychological violence,” Giovanardi concluded.

What Makes a Woman Beautiful?

Italy

U.S. Father Mark Haydu of the Legion of Christ is the international director of the Vatican Museums’ Patrons of the Arts office. He has invited mothers and daughters to attend a special pilgrimage to Italy. Father’s intention is to reveal the Christian vision of femininity and how it has been depicted in paintings, frescoes, and statuary over the centuries. The eight-day pilgrimage is titled “Feminine Beauty in the Arts”. It will journey to Rome, Siena and Nettuno from December 27 to January 3. Father Haydu came up with the idea because he wanted to help families have a deeper conversation about what makes a woman beautiful.
