Affirming Basic Catholic Teachings

USA

In an interview with Catholic World Report, Bishop Robert Vasa -- recently named the coadjutor bishop of Santa Rosa, California – discussed his decision to require all “lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, cantors, and catechists to attest to the fact that they affirm and believe the basic teachings of the Church.” He added: “This includes declaring such things as: I believe in God, the virgin birth, the existence of purgatory, the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. I also accept the Church’s moral teachings, such as the evil and sinfulness of contraception, homosexual activity, and adulterous behavior.”

No Participation in Abortion

US

Two prospective nursing students at Vanderbilt University filed a complaint with the federal government. They had refused to sign a form that states that nursing students “may be providing nursing care for women who are having procedures, including termination of pregnancy.” A day after the Alliance Defense Fund filed suit on the students’ behalf, the university reversed course. It stated that “no health-care provider is required to participate in a procedure terminating a pregnancy if such participation would be contrary to an individual’s religious beliefs or moral convictions.”

Cardinal Kasper Receives Anglican Award

UK

Anglican Archbishop Rowan Williams of Canterbury, the head of the Anglican Communion, has awarded the Lambeth Cross to Cardinal Walter Kasper. The award, begun in 1939, is given to non-Anglicans who have worked to promote Christian unity. Cardinal Kasper served as president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity from 2001 to 2010. He recounted in his address that he saw two “fundamental problems” to face in ecumenical dialogue. The first is “What does it mean to confess the one holy, catholic and apostolic Church and therefore what does it mean to realize this catholicity in its non confessional but all embracing original meaning?” The second is “How to approach with our message the present modern or postmodern mentality in our secularized and pluralistic Western society?”

The Week of Prayer for Christian Friendship

Internet

On his blog British Fr. Ray Blake has commented on the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Here some of his thoughts: This event for most of us is about lukewarm tea and stale biscuits in a damp church hall, making friends or building relationships with people with whom one will never ever share visible unity. It is important but I think to be honest people might be more enthusiastic if spoke about The Week of Prayer for Christian Friendship”. He added: Strange that it is more acceptable to welcome into one's pulpit or lead prayers in one's church the local female liberal Methodist minster but trying to invite a priest of the Society of Pius X would throw up all types of problems and worst, suspicions!

Dear Don Henry,
Yes, I do speak russian. In the Soviet Union, where I grew up, everybody had to speak russian. 😉
And I know Кана.TV. We even have some videos from them. For example:

Вечные обеты Марии-Оксаны Бритик
and more.

I shall do it 😁

Don Henri,
Well said.
My comment was said partly in jest and flowed from Fr. Ray Blake's comment in the news story and Cardinal Kasper's history.

To Holy Cannoli, and everybody:
I dont' think relations with the SSPX should be part of the Octave of Christian Unity, because the SSPX is already part of the Catholic Church.

Closer relations beetween dioceses and SSPX and prayers for greater unity in the Catholic Church, yes. Considering SSPX as another Christian confession and inviting them to prayers for Christian unity, no.

Pax et Bonum!

Well said, Fr. Blake. I've got an idea. Make this priest president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and reassign Cardinal Kasper to some far away place where there are no TV cameras and no reporters to record his compromising statements. Let's try Moldova and if that doesn't do the trick, it's off to Siberia.

😀 🚬 👏 😎 😁 👌
