Today, a sculpture allegedly representing Sr. Restituta Kafka will be unveiled in St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. Sr. Restituta was arrested and murdered by the Nazis during the Second World War. In June 98 she was declared a blessed by Pope John Paul II. Her new sculpture shows a female face without veil and with big breasts. It will be placed in a side-chapel of St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The bust was created by Alfred Hrdlicka, the same artist who caused a worldwide scandal with a painting representing Christ’s Last Supper as a homosexual orgy. The controversial painting was exposed in the diocesan museum of Vienna. Hrdlicka calls himself an atheist and Stalinist.

Corrected Words of Consecration

The Hungarian Bishops’ Conference has decided to implement a longtime wish of the Pope. Beginning with the coming feast of Pentecost the words used in Mass during the consecration of the chalice will be brought in line with the Latin original and with the Gospels. The present wording will thus be changed to A letter informing the priests was signed by the Cardinal Peter Erdő, Primate of Hungary and President of the Council of the European Bishops’ Conference. Attached to the letter were little stickers that can be pasted over the old translation in the missal.

Italian Bishops Warn of Separate Ethnic Enclaves

The Italian Bishops' Conference has issued a sharp critique of their country's immigration policies. The bishops call for a "wider and more articulate strategy" to protect the dignity of new arrivals and assure needy immigrants a "minimally decent place to live." The bishops encourage the government to take steps promoting successful integration of immigrant groups into national life. Unless such steps are taken, they warned, Italy could devolve into a collection of separate ethnic enclaves.

Forced to Remove her Cross

A Catholic hospital worker is facing the sack after refusing orders to remove the crucifix around her neck on alleged health and safety grounds. Helen Slatter 43, was told by her superiors at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital to remove her cross as it 'could harbour infection'. She was summoned to a disciplinary meeting and warned she would be sent home unless she took it off. Slatter, a devout Catholic, claims she is being forced to choose between her faith and her job.
