The message of Pope John Paul II's "Prayer for Peace," now adapted for choirs and orchestras by Stelvio Cipriani, is "Grant days of peace to our time, never again war!"
The music was played for the first time on June 24 in Rome's St. Sabina Basilica as part of Festival without Borders, sponsored by the International Music Association.
This is not the first time that Mr. Cipriani has dedicated a musical composition to Pope John Paul II, as he himself states.
"'Karol's Theme' was made for the 25th anniversary of his papal election and then, naturally, this theme was commissioned to me. I was invited to compose music for this solemn prayer. I did my best."
Pope John Paul II left a particular mark on artists. Marco Celli Stein, who directed the execution of the prayer, confirms this.
"We all understood his great words. We musicians, humbly, wanted to translate and put them to music, the most immediate language and perhaps the one loved by him the most, with the theater."
