Dear brothers and sisters, if we read the passage from the Gospel of John we're going to listen to next Sunday March 17, we, men and women of the beginning of the third millennium even if born in a country with a long Catholic tradition, could hardly understand the desire of those Greeks to see this Jesus that we feel is so distant and irrelevant.
On the contrary, what wouldn't we do, what wouldn't we be willing to pay to see, meet even just to shake hands with an idol of our time? For example a pop star of international music, some stars of the movie industries, gods or goddesses of sports, an influencer of entertainment, culture or politics... Because we are sure that an encounter like this would produce in us an "emotional overdose" that would help us for a few moments to forget the inevitable frustrations due to our limits, mistakes, deficiencies, unfulfilled dreams, fears that grip us, making our daily life sometimes resemble a prison.
Nevertheless, the Church continues to invites us to make our own the desire of the Greeks to see Jesus, because She firmly believes that our encounter with Him could, as it was for the Apostles and for millions of Christians throughout two thousand years, transform our daily life, with its lights and shadows, into a continuous, incredible, extraordinary surprise...
