Dear Fr. Nay,

Dear Fr. Nay,

A good sermon but, for personal reasons and my own limitations, I found it difficult to focus.

I am reading (for the third time) a book which has had, what I believe to be, a positive influence over my thinking during the past year or so. As a result, I care less about spiritual things far removed from me. I've heard more than enough about VC-II, about the Shroud, about beatifications, about Medjugorje, about weeping statues, about homosexuals, about clericalism, about a weak and sometimes corrupt episcopacy, about women priests, about pro-abortion Catholic politicians and even about matters directly related to the Church and her teachings (gasp). My interest in these things, although not completely removed from my consciousness, are of less importance and interest. They have been replace by the following very simple yet very difficult maxim.

Quoting:

“The essential part is to dwell in God and this walking before God means that you live with the conviction ever before your consciousness that God is in you as He is in everything. You live in the firm assurance that He sees all that is within you, knowing you better than you know yourself.

“...Prayer is turning the mind and thoughts towards God. To pray means to stand before God with the mind, mentally to gaze unswervingly at Him and to converse with Him in reverent fear and hope The Principal thing is to stand with the mind in the heart before God and to go on standing before Him unceasingly day and night until the end of life”

How else can we, as Christians, fulfill the mandate given by the apostle to:
Pray without ceasing.—1 Thessalonians 5:17
