Bishop Disappointed

United States

“I am disappointed that Congressman Patrick Kennedy would make public my pastoral and confidential request of nearly three years ago that sought to provide solely for his spiritual well-being.” This bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence has declared yesterday in a statement on the website of his diocese. In February 2007, the bishop had asked Kennedy to refrain from receiving Holy Communion because of the Congressman’s support for abortion rights. “I have no desire to continue the discussion of Congressman Kennedy's spiritual life in public” the bishop said and added: “At the same time, I will absolutely respond publicly and strongly whenever he attacks the Catholic Church, misrepresents the teachings of the Church, or issues inaccurate statements about my pastoral ministry.”

Famous Priest Killed in Moscow

Russia

The famous Russian priest Daniil Sysoyev, the rector of the St. Thomas Cathedral, has been killed in Moscow, Interfax-religion reports. A masked gunman entered the church and murdered the priest who had received death threats for converting Muslims and Christians from other denominations. Sysoyev was from Tatarstan, a predominantly Muslim region of Russia on the Volga river. According to Interfax, he stated on a television program in February 2008: "I have received 10 threats via e-mail that I shall have my head cut off (if I do not stop preaching to Muslims)," Then he added "As I see it, it is a sin not to preach to Muslims."

Bad Vestments Blog

Since last July there is a new blog on the internet called „Bad Vestments”. The site is dedicated to subjecting particularly awful Christian liturgical vestments to the ridicule they so richly deserve. Contributions are welcome and can be e-mailed to the editor of the blog. Its motto is: „Because Christian worship is not supposed to be about you.“ On November 14th, the blog displayed a picture of supposed stoles and commented: „There is nothing wrong with your computer. Do not attempt to adjust your monitor.“
