Paul Carey Jones "Come away, death!" Piano: Jane Samuel Here is something very special and not-so-often-heard. I've been wanting to share this with as many people as possible for the longest, and I finally got the chance to do it. I am an art-song lover, particularly the German repertoire such as Brahms, Schubert, Scumann and all the rest. Paul's recording of this song introduced me to British repertoire, and Finzi's song cycles above all. I have always been a sucker for baritone voice and Shakespeare as well.. So this perfect combination just swept me away. Although I listened to many other versions of "Come away, death" after I heard it from Paul, I was very dissapointed to find out that every single one of them failed to move me the way Paul's interpretation did. Russell Braun's version was the only other that I came as close as possible to liking. Since the day I heard his recordings on download.com, Paul Carey Jones had become one of my most favorite contemporary artists. He is a Welsh baritone on his way to the top and it is a privilage to follow his carreer. He has an amazingly strong, booming baritone that makes you jump out of your seat. And, no, he is not one of those who are as stiff as Commendatore's statue either! Paul has a delightful sense of humor, convincingly real acting capability and very energetic and charming presence on stage. And there's nothing "cliché" about him: he has an impressive repertoire with wide selection of musical gems ranging between Purcell and Britten, baroque to contemporary and anything in between!
