The executive director of the United Nations Population Fund recently gave a speech at the international conference in Berlin calling for a 23 billion dollar budget to terminate undesired pregnancies and deaths during delivery. She also called for a redoubling of efforts related to contraceptives, despite increasing evidence that such programs actually encourage extramarital sexual intercourse and the spread of diseases.

A Priest Killed

Fr Cecilio Lucero, a 48 year-old Filipino priest, was killed by unknown persons in the region of Northern Samar, southeast of the capital Manila. The priest was driving in his car, a Toyota van, when an armed group of about 30 people attacked him. Investigators speculate that the murder may be linked to the activity of Fr. Lucero in defence of civil rights and help of the poor people of the diocese.

Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia on Top

With 23 postulants this year at the Motherhouse of Nashville's Dominican Sisters of St Cecilia, the order has the largest group of new nuns in training in the United States, cathnews.com reports. Most of the new sisters are in their 20s and want to be traditional nuns, wearing full habits and living in a convent. They say that life as a nun offers more than the secular world could ever give them.

The church of Santa Maria Regina Pacis di Ostia, 20 miles from the Vatican offers light candles in memory of deceased persons over the Internet. Father Ludovico Barbangelo, the church’s priest, said that this is “a little gesture that helps lots of people”, particularly “those further away from the church” and “the people who can’t come to mass or those who want to maintain constant contact with us, given that the church isn’t open 24 hours a day.”
