Pope Francis on Calumny

Yesterday, the pope spoke about calumny. He said, “We all commit sins. Calumny is, of course, a sin, too, but it is something more. It aims to destroy the work of God and calumny comes from a very evil thing: it is born of hatred. And hate is the work of Satan,” and: “Where there is calumny, there is Satan himself. "

A Stop at a Church

In his Sunday homily, the parish priest of the Roman Church Santo Spirito in Sassia, not far from the Vatican, told the faithful that on Mercy Sunday, at about 7:15 p.m., Pope Francis visited his church that is dedicated to the devotion of the teachings of St. Faustina Kowalska. Francis was driving back to the Vatican from taking possession of the basilica St. John Lateran. A crowd quickly gathered. Among them was a young couple who was planning to be married. After the pope left, the two entered the church and spoke with the priest. They expressed a wish to draw close to the church because of the unusual events of that evening.

Pope Francis orders overhaul of U.S. nuns to continue

Almost a year ago the Vatican announced a makeover of the largest umbrella group for American nuns. Now, Pope Francis has directed that the overhaul of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious continue. According to Religion News Service, this could bring an end to Francis’ honeymoon with the many American Catholics who had viewed the crackdown on nuns as heavy-handed and unnecessary. Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Mueller, the head of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, met yesterday with the LCWR’s leadership for the first time since Francis’ election.

Retired Bishop Contradicts Detroit Archbishop

My Fox Detroit has reported that retired Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit Thomas Gumbleton has publicly gone against the words of Archbishop Allen Vigneron who recently said that those opposing the Church's teaching on gay marriage should not present themselves for Communion. Reportedly Gumbleton has in the past worn a mitre with a pink triangle and a rainbow ribbon on it. The retired bishop is, among other things, quoted as saying that the Church should be – quote - “pastoral not punitive.” According to an opinion-editorial of Mattew Archbold, Gumbleton's public comments will likely confuse many Catholics who will see these conflicting statements as evidence that the Church hasn't really made up its mind about marriage.
