Ideological ideas that are "absolutely stupid" are overtaking the political system and leading to wars and oppression, Cardinal Gerhard Müller said in an interview at the "National Conservatism" conference in Brussels last week (full video below).
Political ideologues dream of paradise on earth, and these ideologies have led to hell on earth, including the subjugation and murder of people, the cardinal said.
He explained the truism that the state exists to serve the people, not the other way around: "We are not subservient to the state, we are not slaves to the state."
The modern, democratic state develops "from free citizens". He criticised "dictators of language" who want to control what people say and what they eat. "We are being treated like children," Cardinal Müller said, "We must reject this desire for omnipotence of the ideological totalitarian system."
