US Bishops’ President: Latin Mass Restrictions "Dilemma"

US Bishops are discussing the Mass in the Roman Rite among themselves and internally and [allegedly] want to be solicitous for the pastoral needs of those Catholics, Archbishop Paul Coakley, 71, of Oklahoma City told Raymond Arroyo. Archbishop Coakley is the president of the US bishops.

He noticed "one of the dioceses in Texas has just this week relaxed some restrictions in order to make the Traditional Latin Mass more available, at least in that one diocese.”

Arroyo asked what Catholics should do when diocesan Masses are increasingly restricted.

“Well, it's a dilemma that many people who are attached to the Traditional Latin Mass are facing,” Coakley replied.

He has encouraged Catholics to go to the local parish of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP).

Just outside Oklahoma City is the well-attended St. Michael’s Chapel in Bethany, served by the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX).

The archbishop pretended to know little about it: “We still do have a chapel here that is not in communion with us, an independent chapel that celebrates, still I believe, the Traditional Latin Mass.”

Archbishop Coakley also lent weight to the unlikely possibility that Cardinal Roche’s statement - that Leo XIV intends to retain Traditionis Custodes - may be invented: “I'm not sure that we've heard the last word from this pontificate on Traditionis Custodes. […] Cardinal Roche has spoken, but until Pope Leo has spoken, I'm not sure that we know for sure what the way forward will be.”
