From a Christian perspective, several of these events are precisely the places where the Cross becomes concrete rather than theoretical. Burying a child or watching a marriage die does not automatically produce holiness, but it removes the possibility of remaining superficial. The man either turns toward grace or he turns toward bitterness and self-destruction. There is rarely a comfortable middle option after those particular losses.
